How to repurpose old wood pieces into trendy home decor

I bought these little beauties at goodwill for a dollar a piece :) I cleaned all the dust off of them before starting.

Cover them all in gesso and let dry.

Lightly cover the surface with acrylic paint. I chose bright colors.

start creating your background using acrylic paints, stencils, washi tape, torn book paper, whatever you want to use to add texture and interest. Just keep layering on stencils and paints

When I had the background the way I wanted it, I went over the entire piece with Tim holtz distress ink in vintage photo

At this point I realized the hanging hooks were pretty funky looking. No problem, I covered them with Tim holtz alcohol ink in wild plum. These inks are perfect for coloring metals!

Freehand some hearts onto your patterned paper scraps and adhere them with mod podge or gel medium

Cut out your words or quotes and adhere them using mod podge or gel medium. Lightly shade around them in gray to help them blend in. Spray with fixative to prevent inks from running.

I added a few rubons at the last minute, I felt like they need a little something extra. When all the pieces are dry, seal with a matte varnish. Allow to dry overnight.

I added some fun ribbons and trims that I had laying around in my stash ;)

All done and ready to hang!
